Amy Coney Barrett Will Wipe Out Health Care for Millions of North Carolinians
Tillis Has Promised to Rubber Stamp Nominee with Disturbing Anti-Health Care Record
RALEIGH, N.C. - Today, President Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court. Barrett is a hyperpartisan nominee who has fought to repeal health care for tens of millions of people and block access to birth control in her attacks on the Affordable Care Act.
Shortly after Justice Ginsburg’s passing, Thom Tillis said he would rubber stamp any Trump Supreme Court nominee, reversing his 2016 position when he insisted that the Senate not confirm a nominee during a presidential election year.
“Thom Tillis wants to install Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court to complete his career-long dream of wiping out health care for millions of North Carolinians,” said Piedmont Rising Executive Director Casey Wilkinson. “Barrett is a hyperpartisan extremist masquerading as a judge. She will strip health care away from more than 600,000 North Carolinians, overturn protections for pre-existing conditions for 1.7 million, increase the cost of prescription drugs, and make it harder for women to access essential health services, like cancer screenings and birth control. Her record should disqualify her from the Supreme Court, and Tillis’ support for her will disqualify him from the Senate.”
Barrett is an outspoken advocate for invalidating the ACA, openly criticizing Chief Justice John Roberts for his decision to uphold Congress’s authority to enact large portions of the law. She also opposed the Court’s decision to uphold tax credits that nearly 6.4 million Americans rely on to pay for their health coverage, and she opposes requiring coverage for birth control.
