ICYMI: Tillis Earns “Full Flop” for Hypocritically Reversing His Position on Supreme Court Vacancies

Raleigh, N.C. - Yesterday, PolitiFact NC found that Thom Tillis has flip-flopped this year from his 2016 position that Supreme Court vacancies should not be filled during a presidential election year. At that time, Tillis repeatedly emphasized that the country was in the middle of a presidential election, saying at point that it was “essential” to the health of the country “not to launch our nation into a partisan divisive confirmation ballot during the same time the American people are casting ballots to elect our next president.”

On Monday, Tillis voted to confirm a Supreme Court nominee along party lines, just eight days before a presidential election and with 3 million votes already cast in North Carolina. Tillis’ campaign has attempted to cover their hypocrisy with new excuses about divided government, but Politifact found that Tillis completely changed his position on whether voters should have a say in Supreme Court vacancies that occur during an election year. He’s done a`Full Flop.”

Piedmont Rising Executive Director Casey Wilkinson made the following statement:

“Thom Tillis knows he is losing his reelection campaign, and his flip-flop to fill this Supreme Court vacancy is a last cowardly attempt to do what he’s been unable to accomplish on the floor of the Senate: repeal the ACA and take health care away from hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians. North Carolina voters are fed up with Tillis’ hypocrisy, and that’s why in just a few days, North Carolina will elect a new senator who will expand access to health care, not seek to take it away.”
