ICYMI: Tillis Staffer Tells Cancer Survivor His Own Family Would “Gladly Die If They Couldn’t Afford Medical Care”
HuffPost Uncovers Disturbing New Details After Tillis Office Tells Cancer Survivor Health Care is Only for Those Who Can Afford It
Raleigh, N.C. - HuffPost has uncovered disturbing new details today after North Carolina’s WRAL broke the news last night that Thom Tillis’ office told Bev Veals, a constituent and three-time cancer survivor, that being able to afford health care was “just like if I want to go to the store and buy a new dress shirt. If I can’t afford that dress shirt, I don’t get to get it.”
According to HuffPost’s report, shortly before Veals began recording the conversation she asked Tillis’ staffer to consider if it were his parents on the verge of losing their health care. He responded that his own parents would “gladly die if they couldn’t afford medical care.”
“Tillis’ staffer confirmed what Tillis’ voting record has long made clear: he and his allies don’t care whether North Carolinians can get the health care they need,” said Piedmont Rising Executive Director Casey Wilkinson. “Suggesting that anyone, let alone a three-time cancer survivor, consider death as an alternative to having health care is beyond disgusting. As Tillis’ long record of trying to rip away health care from North Carolinians shows, this is not an isolated problem. It starts at the top, and it’s why Tillis must go this November.”
